How to look up the permits for a home

Municipalities publish applications for and decisions on environmental permits (omgevingsvergunningen). These public notices can be searched online and give a first impression of what has been applied for and permitted for a home or in the area.

Public notices

Municipalities, provinces and water boards publish their official notices (bekendmakingen) on officielebekendmakingen.nl. These include applications and decisions for building, renovation, demolition and tree felling, as well as changes to the environmental plan (omgevingsplan).

What you will not find there

  • Old permits dating from before digital publication.
  • Permit-free alterations, such as many rear extensions that fall within the rules.
  • The drawings and supporting documents themselves: these are in the building file.

Requesting the building file

The complete archive of a building, with drawings and permits, is held by the municipality. You can often view or request it digitally. For older buildings, the file is not always complete.

The Environment and Planning Act

The Environment and Planning Act (Omgevingswet) has applied since 1 January 2024. The zoning plan (bestemmingsplan) has been incorporated into the municipality’s environmental plan (omgevingsplan). You can see which rules apply to a location via the Omgevingsloket.

The permit overview in the property report is based on public notices that are available digitally and does not constitute a complete building or permit history.
