Height, roof and volume of a home: the 3D BAG

The 3D BAG is an open three-dimensional model of all buildings in the Netherlands, created by TU Delft and 3DGI. It combines building outlines from the BAG with height measurements from the Actueel Hoogtebestand Nederland (AHN, the national elevation dataset).

What data is included?

  • The height of the roof above ground level, both the highest point and a typical roof height.
  • The roof type: flat, pitched or a combination.
  • The volume of the building and the area of flat and pitched roof sections.
  • The area of walls the building shares with neighbouring buildings.

How reliable is it?

The values are calculated from a point cloud of laser height measurements and are therefore indicative. Dormers, chimneys and trees can affect the results, and a recent renovation may not yet have been measured. The year of measurement is shown with the data.

What is it useful for?

Shared walls say something about heat loss: a mid-terrace house loses less heat than a detached house. The roof area gives a first impression of the space available for solar panels, although an on-site inspection is needed for proper advice.
