Noise, air quality and climate around your home

Noise, air quality and climate are area indicators: they come from computer models and maps for an area, not from measurements at a single home. They give a good picture of the surroundings, but no judgement on the house itself.

Noise: what does Lden mean?

Lden is the average noise level over a 24-hour period, with noise in the evening and at night weighted more heavily. The European strategic noise maps show areas from 55 dB Lden upwards. For comparison: the World Health Organization recommends a level below 53 dB Lden for road traffic.

Air quality

Each year, the RIVM (National Institute for Public Health and the Environment) calculates concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) and particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) on a 1 by 1 kilometre grid. The current European limit values are 40 µg/m³ for NO₂, 25 for PM2.5 and 40 for PM10. The WHO guideline values from 2021 are much stricter: 10, 5 and 15 µg/m³. Stricter limit values will apply in the EU from 2030.

Climate: flooding, heat and subsidence

The Klimaateffectatlas (Climate Impact Atlas) shows, among other things, the likelihood of flooding, the expected water depth, the perceived temperature on hot days and measured land subsidence. The classes are taken directly from the atlas legend.

A low class does not mean that nothing can happen, and a high class does not mean there is anything wrong with the home. Use this data to ask targeted questions, for example about noise insulation or measures against heat.
